What this tool does
Type in an E number, like E120 or E471, or the name of a food additive, and the checker will tell you what it is made from and whether it fits a halal, vegan, vegetarian, or other dietary need.
It is a quick way to get a straight answer on an ingredient you have spotted on a label, without having to read through long articles or forum threads.
When to use it
It is handy when you are stood in a supermarket aisle squinting at the back of a packet, or sat at home going through the shopping before you cook. If you follow a halal diet, eat vegan or vegetarian, avoid pork or alcohol, or just want to know whether something comes from an animal, a plant, or a lab, this will give you a plain answer.
It is also useful for parents checking children's snacks, anyone with religious or ethical concerns about hidden animal products, and shoppers who want to double check a new brand before buying it again.
How it works
Enter the E number or ingredient name in the box, press check, and you will get a short summary covering what the additive is, its common source, and how it sits with the main dietary groups. There is nothing to sign up for, your search is not saved, and you can look up as many ingredients as you like.
